In 2009, Klamath Hospice launched its new program, Caring Companions. The philosophy behind the program is to provide an empathetic witness to the transition that occurs with death. In essence, the program ensures that patients and their families have the support and presence they need at the end of the patient’s life. This type of vigil program has been proven to lessen the effects of complicated grief for loves ones.
Specially trained volunteers provide a supportive and calming presence to patients who are actively dying. This is accomplished through silent presence, playing soft music, or providing gentle touch. This gift of companionship provides great comfort to the patient and his or her family. The volunteers are also trained to identify and raise awareness of the potential complications in the end-stage dying process.
The Caring Companions program has been designed to specifically meet the needs of those patients who have no family involved or present, or whose loved ones need additional support and companionship.
